GSM or Wi-Fi gate opener: which one really works at your gate?
There are three ways to open a gate from your phone: the mobile network, with a SIM inside the device; your home Wi-Fi, with an app that goes over the internet; and Bluetooth, from close by.
None of them is best in every case: it depends on where the gate is, who needs to open it and what’s already on site. This guide compares them.
The three options
How each one works
GSM gate opener. The device has its own SIM and runs on the mobile network. You open it by calling its number from an authorised phone, and on models that support it from an app too. It doesn’t use the router or depend on your home line: all it needs is power and signal.
Wi-Fi gate opener. The device joins your home Wi-Fi and is controlled from an app over the internet. No SIM is needed, but the Wi-Fi has to reach the gate and the router and line have to be on.
Bluetooth. The phone talks directly to the device, with no network: it only works from close by, a few metres away, but also where your phone has no signal.
GSM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compared
The differences that matter when you choose, with no brands or models.
| What matters | GSM (SIM) | Wi-Fi | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the gate needs | Mobile coverage; where it’s weak, an external antenna | Home Wi-Fi that reaches the gate | Nothing: you just need to be close |
| Where you can open from | Any distance | Any distance, if the house is online | Only from close by |
| Running costs | The SIM: a subscription or top-ups | Nothing extra, if you already have a home line | None |
| If the home internet goes down | Keeps opening | Can no longer be opened remotely | Keeps opening |
| If the power goes out | Stops | Stops, and so does the router | Stops |
| Who can open | Anyone with an authorised number, even without a smartphone | Anyone with the app and an account | Anyone with the app who is on site |
| Security | Stays outside your home network | Sits on your home network: how well it’s protected matters | Opens only from close by |
Where each one fits
Four typical cases
Gate far from the router. At the end of the drive, behind a wall, in an underground garage: Wi-Fi often doesn’t reach, or comes and goes. Here a gate opener without Wi-Fi, a GSM one, works better; where there’s no mobile signal either, as in some basements, Bluetooth does the opening.
Holiday home without internet. If there’s no line in the house, a Wi-Fi gate opener would mean getting one. A GSM gate opener already has its own network: the SIM is all it takes.
Apartment building with many users. Everyone opens with a call from their own phone, even people without a smartphone, and numbers are added and removed remotely. With Wi-Fi you need a shared network that reaches the gate and someone to look after it.
Short-term rentals. Guests need to get in without keys and without installing anything, only for the days of their stay. A call from a number authorised for those dates is the simplest way; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth need an app and an account to hand over.
If the gate is close to the house, the Wi-Fi reaches it well and you’re the only one opening it, a Wi-Fi gate opener does the job with no subscription.
BGates AI 4G
4G GSM and Bluetooth in one device
BGates AI 4G is a 4G GSM gate opener with VoLTE and Bluetooth 5.0. It has its own IoT SIM inside: it doesn’t use Wi-Fi and doesn’t depend on the router. It opens with a free call from an authorised number, from the app at any distance, or via Bluetooth within 10–20 metres, even where your phone has no signal.
The devices work with their own SIM and are not exposed on the internet. They’re mounted in the electrical panel, on DIN rail, by an installer.
€69 including VAT, then the SIM: Smart, for private customers, from €3.99 a month on the yearly plan, VAT included, up to 500 numbers; Business, for VAT-registered businesses, from €6.99 a month + VAT on the yearly plan, up to 1,000 numbers.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most often from people who need to choose.
Yes. A GSM gate opener uses the mobile network and needs neither Wi-Fi nor a home line; Bluetooth needs no network at all, but only works from close by.
For a GSM gate opener you fit an external antenna, which takes the signal outside the panel. Where there’s no signal at all, Bluetooth still works from close by.
It works as long as the SIM’s operator keeps 2G on, and in several countries it’s already off or has a date. A new installation needs a 4G module with VoLTE. The dates are on the 2G switch-off page.
It depends on the SIM. With BGates AI 4G the SIM is included and the Smart plan starts at €3.99 a month on the yearly plan; openings are free, whether by call or from the app. All the details are on the prices page.
The comparison describes the three technologies in general: range, features and costs vary from one device to another.
Device prices include VAT. Smart plan VAT included; Business plan for VAT-registered businesses only, fees + VAT. The SIM activation is charged on first purchase. Installation is not included.
